The journal was founded in 2003.
In 2007 – the Journal was included in the "List of the Higher Attestation Commission".
In 2009 – An offer was received from the Springer publishing house to create an English-language version of the magazine.
In 2010 – An agreement was reached on the conditions for publishing the English version.
In 2011, the first issue of the English-language version of the Russian Journal of Genetics: Applied Research was published. Two (out of six) issues per year are given to Ecological Genetics.
In 2017, Ecological Genetics was accepted for indexing in SCOPUS with a depth of coverage up to and including 2017.
In 2018, the Russian Journal of Genetics: Applied Research ceased to exist.
Since 2019, Ecological Genetics has been published in two languages – Russian and English – and is included in the Russian Science Citation Index (external module of Web of Science)
As of 2020, Environmental Genetics is indexed at EBSCO and CNKI.
