I conclude that despite the variation existing in any language at any moment of time human brain architecture and language acquisition mechanisms determine that, in a long-term perspective, phonetic changes are mostly regular.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p>В работе предпринимается попытка совместить сведения о степени регулярности фонетических изменений, анализируемые в работах компаративистов и социолингвистов, с данными, касающимися, во-первых, усвоения языка, а во-вторых, лежащих в его основе мозговых механизмов; делается вывод о том, что при всей имеющейся в языке в каждый момент времени вариативности устройство человеческого мозга и механизмы языкового наследования определяют тот факт, что языковые изменения в долгосрочной временной перспективе оказываются в основном регулярными.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>comparative linguistics</kwd><kwd>language acquisition</kwd><kwd>language change</kwd><kwd>neurolinguistics</kwd><kwd>sociolinguistics</kwd><kwd>sound correspondences</kwd><kwd>variation</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>вариативность</kwd><kwd>звуковые соответствия</kwd><kwd>нейролингвистика</kwd><kwd>социолингвистика</kwd><kwd>сравнительно-историческое языкознание</kwd><kwd>усвоение языка</kwd><kwd>языковые изменения</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group/></article-meta></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><mixed-citation>Ахутина 2014 — Ахутина Т.
