The study has a dual objective: to identify the discursive frameworks through which social media users in these countries construct narratives about the Soviet past and to explore how these representations are embedded in visions of a desired future. The empirical basis of the study comprises over 5,000 user comments on social media posts containing the keyword “USSR” across the most visited online platforms in each of the three countries. The analysis reveals two distinct types of narratives. The first type, which can be broadly categorized as Soviet-nostalgic, portrays the USSR as an ideal or a model to be emulated. The most frequently recurring themes within this narrative include social justice, interethnic friendship, victory in the Great Patriotic War, industrialization, and stability/security about the future. The second type of narrative, which may be termed anti-Soviet, consists of comments emphasizing issues such as Soviet-era repressions (collectivization, famine, and politically motivated mass killings), poverty, shortages, an inefficient economy, and corruption.</p>
Второй тип нарративов – условно антисоветский: его образуют комментарии, поднимающие такие темы, как советские репрессии (коллективизация, голод, политически мотивированные массовые убийства), бедность, дефицит, неэффективная экономика и коррупция.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>USSR</kwd><kwd>Russia</kwd><kwd>Kazakhstan</kwd><kwd>Uzbekistan</kwd><kwd>collective memory</kwd><kwd>post-Soviet countries</kwd><kwd>digital spaces</kwd><kwd>social media</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>СССР</kwd><kwd>Россия</kwd><kwd>Казахстан</kwd><kwd>Узбекистан</kwd><kwd>коллективная память</kwd><kwd>постсоветские страны</kwd><kwd>цифровое пространство</kwd><kwd>социальные медиа</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><award-group><funding-source><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="ru">Министерство науки и высшего образования РФ</institution></institution-wrap><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="en">Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation</institution></institution-wrap></funding-source><award-id>075-15-2022-326</award-id></award-group></funding-group></article-meta></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Abramov, R. 2011 “Sovetskii cherdak” rossiiskoi blogosfery: analiz nostal’gicheskikh virtual’nykh soobshchestv [The “Soviet Attic” of the Russian Blogosphere: An Analysis of Nostalgic Virtual Communities].
