The waves themselves are generated by the strongest earthquakes that occur in subduction zones. With a characteristic speed of deformation waves of the order of 100 km/year, they travel a distance of about 2000–2500 km from the Aleutian and Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zones to the Arctic zone in approximately 20–25 years. This corresponds to the time difference between a series of the most powerful earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 8.5, which occurred in these zones in the interval 1952–1965, and the beginning of a sharp climate warming in 1980. After the start of the gas filtration process as a result of the destruction of the pore microstructure and a sharp increasing the permeability of the geomedium due to the impact of a deformation wave, the process of methane emission can continue autonomously for tens and even hundreds of years, depending on the thickness of the disturbed gas-saturated layer. This explains the ongoing emission of methane on the Arctic shelf for the last forty-odd years after the strongest earthquakes of the middle of the last century that initiated it.</p>
Этим объясняется продолжающаяся эмиссия метана на арктическом шельфе последние сорок с лишним лет после инициировавших ее сильнейших землетрясений середины прошлого века.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>large earthquakes</kwd><kwd>climate warming</kwd><kwd>Arctic</kwd><kwd>gas hydrates</kwd><kwd>methane emission</kwd><kwd>trigger mechanism</kwd><kwd>deformation waves</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>cильнейшие землетрясения</kwd><kwd>потепление климата</kwd><kwd>Арктика</kwd><kwd>газгидраты</kwd><kwd>эмиссия метана</kwd><kwd>триггерный механизм</kwd><kwd>деформационные волны</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><award-group><funding-source><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="ru">Правительство Российской Федерации</institution></institution-wrap><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="en">Government of the Russian Federation</institution></institution-wrap></funding-source></award-group><award-group><funding-source><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="ru">РНФ</institution></institution-wrap><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="en">Russian Science Foundation</institution></institution-wrap></funding-source><award-id>21-77-3001</award-id></award-group><award-group><funding-source><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="ru">Минобрнауки</institution></institution-wrap><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="en">Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation</institution></institution-wrap></funding-source></award-group><award-group><funding-source><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="ru">Правительство Российской Федерации</institution></institution-wrap><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="en">Government of the Russian Federation</institution></institution-wrap></funding-source><award-id>AAAA-A19-119011490131-3</award-id></award-group></funding-group></article-meta></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Danilov-Danilyan V.I., Kattsov V.
