Abstract

The skin and the musculoskeletal system of the human body have many more similarities and physiologic relationships than meets the eye. With similar composition, function, and regulatory mechanisms, the skin and the body's bone and joint system are closely related, both in terms of physiologic interactions and pathophysiologic processes. In addition to anatomo-physiological relationships, the skin and the bone and joint system are often affected in combination, becoming part of the symptom complex of a number of hereditary syndromes, which may also indicate the close biological commonality of these organs. Skin and bone tissue may also be affected in combination as a result of primary cutaneous or orthopedic pathology. The study of the anatomo-physiologic and clinical relationships of the skin and the bone and joint system can play an important practical role in solving both dermatologic and orthopedic problems. Rational interdisciplinary interaction between dermatologist and orthopedist can contribute to faster achievement of positive clinical results, reduce the time of possible rehabilitation, prevent the development of comorbid disorders and prolong disease remission. All of these can lead to shorter management time, patient recovery and improved quality of life. This article presents data on the relationship and interaction of the skin and the bone and joint system in norm and pathology, and attempts to classify combined disorders with the description of skin and orthopedic pathology, both in hereditary syndromes and diseases, and acquired conditions of various etiologies. We also sounded the term “orthopedic dermatology” to designate an interdisciplinary direction of medical knowledge, the purpose of which is to solve clinical problems associated with combined lesions of skin and bone tissue.
