Current conception of functional constipations and approaches to treatment

The problem of functional constipation is discussed, and the classification of disease, the causes of its development, diagnostic procedure and treatment guidelines are presented. The results of comparative study, devoted to examination of effectiveness of two drugs - Bisacodyl and Dulkolax - in 110 patients with chronic functional constipation, are presented. According to results of study, Dulkolax and bisakodil are recommended as effective drugs for the treatment of functional constipation, especially in elderly patients. Dulkolax have some advantages over Bisakodil in terms of soft change in stool frequency and consistency, achievement of complete depletion, more rapid and predictable time of effect onset, and significant increase in the electromotor activity of colon. Tolerability of Dulkolax and bisakodil was very good and good in 80% and 72% of cases, respectively.
