Abstract
In the article main components of the social role of a psychiatrist are discussed. The fears and myths of social consciousness concerning psychiatry, mechanisms of forming public myths and stigma are presented. The material is based on the results of the survey of medical students. The questioning investigated the students’ attitude to psychiatry and mental disorders patients. Stigma is considered from the standpoint of historical socio-biological feasibility. Main directions of work on overcoming of social stigma and misconceptions concerning psychiatry are given.
