Community perceptions and biosample donation intentions of military conscripts and military person

Abstract

This paper presents data drawn from a study of military conscripts and military personnel in order to answer some questions about attitude and readiness to types of donation different biosamples in the context of the development of a potential biobanking system.

The aim of the study was to assess military personnel and military conscripts attitudes and intentions toward the procedures of the different biosample donation.

There were two independent groups of respondents: military conscripts (n=223, average age 21.1±1.1 years) and combat veterans (n=124, average age 31.2±1.8 years). The study was conducted in 2024-2025 in St. Petersburg.

More than half of the respondents (61.4%) expressed willingness to donate bone marrow, but only 49.2% respondents expressed willingness to donate of reproductive material. Rate of respondents were supportive of procedures of donate reproductive material and its cryoconcervation during their service on duty consist 50,7%. Also 50.43% of respondents expressed a positive attitude toward storing biological material for subsequent DNA identification. Participants in the group of combat veterans demonstrated a higher proportion of positive approval for experimental treatments using cellular technologies (55.16% vs. 70.16%; χ2=6.894, p=0.009) and a higher rate of willingness to donate biomaterial for subsequent DNA-identification (62.9% vs. 43.5%; χ2=11.241, p<0.001).

The creation of a biobanking system in the military healthcare requires educational efforts aimed at promoting a positive image of donating various biological materials among the assigned population.
