The various facts and observations in favour of the ecological-genetic hypothesis of the origins of curly birch are reported.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p>На основании анализа литературы и собственных данных развивается и детализируется ранее высказанная эколого-генетическая гипотеза о происхождении карельской березы, в основу которой положены представления о взаимодействии специфических природно-климатических факторов и условий, сложившихся на территории северо-запада континентальной Европы в течение так называемого малого ледникового периода, высокой генетической полиморфности популяций и адаптивном характере многих анатомо-морфологических признаков и физиолого-биохимических особенностей произрастающих здесь представителей рода Betula L. Приведены различные факты и наблюдения в поддержку эколого-генетической гипотезы происхождения карельской березы.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>curly (Karelian) birch Betula pendula Roth var.
