Waveguiding Properties of the Planar Structures Containing Layers With a Negative Index of Refraction

Abstract

The analysis of guided modes propagation in 3-layer structures containing layers with a negative index of refraction is lead. The conditions of bulk and surface TE and ТМ modes existence in waveguides with various combinations of the left handed and right handed layers are found and studied. It is shown the dispersive characteristics essentially depend on ratios of a layer dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, and also an asymmetry measure of the structure. The criterion of guided modes degeneration is established and investigated.
