Abstract
In this review we attempt to tell the reader about the present-day activities in the biggest Russian astronomical observatory, Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) located in the Northern Caucasus. The observatory possesses a number of instruments operating in the optical and radio wavelength bands. Hereafter we focus on the largest Russian 6-meter optical telescope that was put in operation 45 years ago.
