The reviewed monograph deals with the institute of seisin which played an important role in the regulation of ownership rights in Anglo-Norman England of the 11th–13th centuries. This institute has ancient Germanic roots and received shape in the Frankish kingdom of the preceding three centuries. Having been transferred to England as a result of the Norman conquest of 1066, it gained strength for further development and underwent a serious transformation which is the object of the author’s attention. Particularly he underlines the polysemy of the term’s meaning on the English soil and the necessity to take into account the symbolic component of the ownership rights. The reviewer evaluates this book very highly. He notes the numerosity and the diversity of the sources which the author has studied, a good command of the extensive special literature and his confident orientation in the history and theory of law by no means limited to the Middle Ages.
