Аннотация
Статья посвящена шотландскому индологу Джеймсу Тоду (1782–1835), открывшему для европейской публики историю и культуру раджпутов – военно-феодального сословия Западной, Северной и Центральной Индии. Книга нанесла удар по двум стереотипам, уже утвердившимся в индологии и массовом европейском восприятии Индии. Первый из них прокламировал «антиисторизм» индийской культуры, второй, даже в противовес популярному в Европе медиевализму, рассматривал историю Индии после падения древних царств исключительно как упадок и деградацию, отказывая стране в способности к самостоятельному развитию. Сочинение приобрело широкую известность и подверглось сокрушительной критике, особенно в связи с выводом автора о феодальном характере раджпутского общества. Категорическое неприятие данной концепции было связано с социальной практикой и идеологией британского колониализма, не готового увидеть в туземцах аналог благородных рыцарей средневековой Европы. Индийские читатели, напротив, приняли книгу Тода с восторгом; переведенная на местные языки, она стала одним из источников формирования исторического дискурса в индийском просветительстве и формировавшемся национализме.
