The paper presents the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, classification, and diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and the current algorithm for its treatment. Much attention is given to a three-step approach to treating GERD, in accordance with which the author proposes to rationally choose drugs. The benefits of using Maalox in relieving the major symptoms of GERD are disclosed.
