Abstract

Carbamazepine main clinical-pharmacological characteristics are reviewed from the point of view its use in the alcoholism complex therapy. Its efficacy and safety is the same as in barbiturates, benzodiazepines, chlormethiazole and tiapride. Carbamazepine should be the drug of choice in patients with the risk of withdrawal seizures. In the alcohol withdrawal syndrome the combination of carbamazepine and other drugs (tiapride orchlormethiazole, in particularly is indicated. Carbamazepine has some preference compared to barbiturates and benzodiazepines: lack of addictiveness, sedation and cataleptic effects, cognitive suppression, cross-tolerance. Because of immunomodulating, anti-tumor, analgesic, antidiuretic, hepatoprotective and neurotropic effects carbamazepine may be used in the complex treatment of somatically complicated alcoholic patients.
