CEREBRAL METABOLISM PECULIARITIES AND THEIR CORRELATIONS WITH AGGRESSION IN VASCULAR DEMENTIA

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the investigation of the psychophysiological mechanisms of aggression. Interconnection of aggression (according to the Buss-Durkee scale) and the cerebral regional glucose metabolism rates (according to the PET 18F FDG data) in patients suffered from vascular dementia were studied. The covert aggression rates correlated with cerebral glucose hypometabolism rates in frontal and cingulate cortex, whereas overt aggression - with the increase of glucose metabolism rates in amygdala and temporal cortex. The obtained results show that where are different psychophysiological mechanisms responsible for overt and covert aggression phenomena. The connections of the increased hostility and frontal glucose hypometabolism possibly have diagnostic meaning: appearance of the hostility in patients with vascular dementia could have the predictive value indicating the decrease of the frontal glucose metabolism. But for the evaluation of this diagnostic feature the follow-up studies required.
