Valdman Institute of Pharmacology
First St.-Petersburg Pavlov State Medical University
The Institute of Pharmacology was established in 1995 on the basis of the Department of Pharmacology with a course in clinical pharmacology, the Laboratory of Narcotic Drug Pharmacology, and the Department of Pharmacology of the Research Center. In 1996, by the decision of the Academic Council, the Institute was named after Artur Viktorovich Valdman.
Currently, the Institute includes the Departments of Psychopharmacology and Neuropharmacology, comprising a number of laboratories, enabling the concentration of efforts of faculty and researchers on the successful solution of current tasks in modern pharmacology.
The Institute conducts research in the fields of experimental and clinical pharmacology of neuropsychotropic agents and addictive conditions, pharmacogenetics, as well as in pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacovigilance, pharmacoeconomics, and health technology assessment, the latter being carried out jointly with the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Evidence-Based Medicine.
The scientific solution of these problems has allowed for the development of new approaches to the pharmacotherapy of pain, addictive conditions, optimization of the methodology for assessing the narcogenic potential of compounds from various classes, and the identification of new and promising analgesics.
The Institute cooperates not only with St. Petersburg and Russian scientists but also with foreign colleagues from the USA, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, and France.
Research activities:
- Preclinical experimental study of the pharmacological activity of biologically active substances to identify addictive (narcogenic) potential, analgesic properties, antidepressant properties, antipsychotic properties, anxiolytic properties, anticonvulsant properties, nootropic properties;
- Preclinical experimental study of the toxicological potential of biologically active substances using methods of behavioral pharmacology to identify disorders of motivated behavior (sexual behavior, aggression, etc.), cognitive impairments, disorders of motor activity and coordination;
- Development and validation of new methods for the experimental analysis of specific pharmacological activity (within the aforementioned areas);
- Screening of modern headache treatments on a model of craniovascular pain;
- Analysis of the state of development of various problems in the field of preclinical psychopharmacology, including literature reviews and report preparation (in Russian and English). Translation of specialized literature and preparation of annotated references;
- Clinical studies of pharmacotherapy and nonmedical treatment of addiction diseases (all phases, license of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation);
- l treatment of addiction diseases
- Development and compilation of drug formularies for medical institutions.
Educational activities:
- Conducting "Schools on Rational Antibacterial Therapy" for physicians of medical institutions;
- Conducting seminars and lectures on clinical pharmacology for pharmacists and pharmaceutical chemists;
- A course of lectures for physicians and clinical residents on "Modern Pharmacotherapy of Headaches."
- Advanced Training Course for Pharmacology Teachers of Medical Universities and Faculties: "Selected Topics in Neuropsychopharmacology" (a joint program with the Department of Pharmacology)
Medical activities:
- Provision of advisory assistance in searching for information on medicinal drugs;
- Diagnosis and treatment of headaches.
