The article is concerned with present-day knowledge of the causes of pain in the spine, the role of inflammation in the process of degeneration of cartilage and bone tissues. The data for the mechanisms of action of selective COX-2 inhibitor nimesulide, efficacy and safety of its use in degenerative and inflammatory diseases of the spine are presented.
