Abstract
Prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) is increasing year by year, taking the nature of the epidemic. In Russia the demographic situation is characterized by rapid growth of the elderly population. The proportion of persons over 60 years with MS is 42-43.5%. Arterial hypertension (AH) is one of the most important components of the pathogenesis of MS. AH occurs in 50% of persons over 65 years, and isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) occurs approximately in 2/3 of patients. The present article is concerned with basic mechanisms of formation, characteristics of clinical presentation and diagnosis, as well as basic approaches to the treatment of ISH in elderly patients with MS.
