Abstract

The article discusses the potentials for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis (OP) with modern medical therapy in older patients. The points of issues are risk factors for OP, diagnostic criteria, indications for the start of drug therapy; the advisability of use of calcium and vitamin D is demonstrated.
This article presents the results of current clinical studies on efficacy and tolerability of a new drug for the treatment of OP - strontium ranelate, including those involving evaluation of the effectiveness of strontium ranelate in elderly patients with OP in combination with the syndrome of senile infirmities.
