Abstract
The study was aimed to the analysis of the frequency of prescription of potentially not recommended drugs according to the «STOPP START» criteria for elderly patients in therapeutic departments of hospital. For 4 months, medical records of 150 patients, 47 men and 103 women aged 79.0± 15.5 years, were analyzed. On average, patients have received 6.4±4.0 drugs simultaneously. Analysis of prescription leaflets has been identified 87 potentially not recommended drugs, the use of which should be avoided in older patients in certain clinical situations. The most commonly prescribed potentially not recommended drugs included nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents for moderate and severe arterial hypertension (16% of patients) and chronic renal insufficiency (10% of patients), and systemic corticosteroids instead of inhaled corticosteroids as maintenance therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (4.66% of patients). The findings give evidence of the frequent prescription of potentially not recommended drugs for older patients in the therapeutic departments of hospital that leads to the increase of the risk of adverse drug reactions in these patients.
