Abstract

According to a new Global Burden of Disease Survey 2010 published by WHO in 2012, a tension-type headache (TTH) (20.1 %) is considered as the second most common disease in the world among men and women and the most common among all types of headaches. In population-based study of the prevalence of headaches, which was conducted in the Russian Federation, tension-type headache was found in 25.4% of subjects. Diagnosis is based on the diagnostic criteria for tension-type headache, presented in the International Classification of Headache and approved for use in the practice by the Russian Headache Research Society. Treatment consists of drug therapy of attacks, preventive pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Despite numerous studies on the diagnosis and treatment of tension-type headache, good scope of work remains for the development and introduction of new drugs and non-pharmacological methods for the treatment of episodic and chronic forms of the disease.
