Among the factors contributing to disability after stroke, the most important are motor defects, with central spastic paresis as a major clinical manifestation. Spasticity can be revealed during evaluation of passive movements of the limbs as increased muscle resistance in response to its rapid stretching. Treatment of spastic paresis is a formidable task. In this regard, correction of violation of muscle tone becomes an important issue. In recent years, botulinum toxin type A was introduced in the practice for the treatment of post-stroke spasticity. Although it is generally believed that botulinotherapy should be used in combination with other existing methods of rehabilitation treatment of spasticity, additional research is required for the assessment of optimal timing of treatment and the possibility of combined treatment. This article analyzes the effectiveness of comprehensive rehabilitation of post-stroke spastic muscle hypertonia at different stages of the disease using botulinum toxin type A.
