Resumo

From the time of formation of the fetal nervous system, vitamin D is a steroid hormone fundamentally necessary for the formation and functioning of neuronal systems. The importance of vitamin D as neurosteroid (i.e., neuroactive steroid hormone) is confirmed by the biosynthesis of the active form of vitamin in brain; widespread expression of VDR receptors (vitamin D receptor) in the brain; activated VDR receptors are crucial for the biosynthesis of dopamine; vitamin D upregulates neurotrophic factors and exhibits neuroprotective effects; vitamin D deficiency is associated with a number of neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive disorders; and vitamin D has a synergism with other neurosteroids.
