Halitosis - bad breath - is a common problem. Many people of different ages experience periodic or constant manifestations of this unpleasant condition. Bad breath disrupts a person's social life and causes difficulties in workplace communication. As a symptom of many diseases, halitosis helps identify and facilitate timely treatment.
One of the key steps in treating halitosis is determining the source of the unpleasant odor. This could be dental issues, ENT pathologies (particularly chronic tonsillitis), or gastrointestinal disorders. Identifying the causes often requires the involvement of doctors from various specialties.
In the practice of an otorhinolaryngologist (ENT doctor), the most frequent cause of bad breath is chronic tonsillitis. Detecting halitosis before and after possible treatment relies on modern devices, such as a gas analyzer of exhaled air—the so-called "electronic nose."
