The utopian and feminist novel Herland, which was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1915, is a fantasy setting. It was not until 1979 that it was published as a book; prior to that, it had been published as a serial in Gilman's magazine, The Forerunner. Gilman was herself a pioneer in the field. A significant number of people believe that Charlotte Perkins Gilman was one of the most influential female social economists, feminists, and sociologists working during her time period trap the cat. Despite this, her name is almost never mentioned, or more accurately, it is left out of a significant number of historical and sociological accounts. Despite the fact that her books went through numerous editions and were translated into at least seven different languages during the first two decades of the twentieth century, she did not achieve this goal.
Gilman was an outspoken critic of both the past and the present, and she was a firm believer that women should have equal economic opportunities. Even in her works of fiction, she worked toward the development of a coherent body of thought that integrated socialist principles with feminist ideals.
