Rules of Writing Bibliography (Bibliography and References)

The present rules of writing a bibliography (lists of literature given at the end of an article) are based on the requirements of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE, http://www.icmje.org/) and also on the rules of submission of journals to Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI, https://elibrary.ru) and on the requirements of Higher Attestation Commission (HAC, http://vak.ed.gov.ru/).

REFERENCES TO SOURCES IN TEXT

  1. References to sources in the manuscript are given in Arabic numerals in square brackets inserted into the text; the normal style should be used (like that of the surrounding text), but references SHOULD NOT be emphasized (by using italics, semi-bold font or underlining) or by placing them upper- or lowercase.
  2. In case one statement is illustrated by several sources in the list of literature, the numerals should be separated by commas WITH NO SPACES. Example: [3,4].
  3. If it is necessary to refer to more than 2 sources sequentially following one another in the list of literature, references should be presented as a range. Example: [15-17].
  4. It is not recommended that more than three references to one statement should be used except for the cases when it is of high significance for the presentation of the material.

BIBLIOGRAPHY AND REFERENCES: GENERAL RULES OF WRITING

  1. Quantity of lists. According to the requirements of Russian and international databases, for qualitative and precise evaluation of citation rate of scientific works, TWO LISTS OF REFERENCE to information sources used in the work should be given–Bibliography and References.
  2. Quantity of sources. The quantity of references to sources should be limited. The recommended amount of cited works: in the articles concerning original research and in description of clinical cases – up to 20 sources, in reviews and discussions – up to 40 sources. In case of objective necessity this quantity may be increased upon agreement with the editorial body.
  3. Kind of sources. Any sources can be cited except for non-published works. It is not recommended to refer to dissertations and author’s abstracts - in these cases it is more preferable to refer to published articles on the given material.
  4. Order of presentation of sources. A numbered Bibliography and References are given at the end of manuscript sequentially one after another under the headings: Bibliography and References, respectively. In Bibliography and References all the works are mentioned IN THE ORDER OF CITATION and NOT in the alphabetic order.
  5. Differences of lists. In the Bibliography and References the same sources are indicated, in the same sequence and under the same numbers. Differences in writing references in Bibliography and References are given in more detail below.
  6. Volume and sequence of information in references:
    • for books –surname and initials of author(s), full title of the book, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, volume or issue;
    • for articles in periodicals – surname and initials of author(s),title of the article, full title of the journal (collection), date of publication(for collection – also place of publication and publisher), volume, number (issue), the first and the last page of the article;
    • for articles in non-periodicals (books) - surname and initials of author(s), title of article, full title of the book (collection), place of publication, publisher, date of publication, the first and the last page of the article;
    • for thesis and reports at conferences (seminars, symposia) - surname and initials of author(s), title of report, full title of collection of thesis or conference proceedings, date and location of conference, volume, number (issue),  the first and the last page of thesis or report;
    • for patents and author’s certificates – a kind of patent document, its number, country that issued the document, IPC index, name of invention, author(s), date of application, date of publication and information about official publisher where information about patent document, information of priority is published;
    • for deposited manuscripts – surname and initials of author(s), full title of manuscript, name of organization, date of publication, total amount of pages, place of deposition;
    • for dissertations –surname and initials of author(s), full title, place and year of defense, specialty code, dates of defense and approval, place  of defense;
    • for electronic publications –surname and initials of author (if any), title of publication, resource title (if any), electronic address (URL), date of reference.
  7. Quantity of authors. In bibliographic description of a source all authors should be mentioned if their quantity is from one to three. If there are more than three authors of publication, the first three authors should be mentioned followed by abbreviation “and others” or “et al”. (Attention! There should be obligatorily a comma between the surname and initials of the last author and “and others” or “et al”.).
  8. Titles and abbreviations. It is unacceptable to shorten (or in some other way change) titles of articles and of journals. Exception: titles of English journals may be given in OFFICIAL (!) abbreviation (in Bibliography abbreviated titles of journal are given with a full stop, and in References – with no full stop).Correct abbreviation of the title of a journal may be found in the title catalogue of the MedLine data base (NLM Catalog), CAS Source Index, WorldCat library or Web of Science (ISI) catalogue. If the official abbreviation of a journal title cannot be found, its full title should be indicated.
  9. DOI. In all cases when cited material has digital identifier(Digital Object Identifier -DOI), it should be indicated at the very end of description of a source. Existence of DOI for the given source should be checked on site http://search.crossref.org/ or https://www.citethisforme.com. To obtain DOI one should introduce the title of a source in English into the search box. The latter site, besides DOI, automatically generates correctly presented bibliographic description of an article in English in AMA(Vancouver)citation style. The overwhelming majority of foreign journal articles that have been registered in CrossRef system since 2000 and many articles in Russian (registered after 2013) have unique DOI.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: SPECIAL RULES FOR WRITING REFERENCES

  1. Particulars as to the date and place of publication. Bibliographic description of references to sources in the Bibliography should be written according to ГОСТ Р0.5-2008. Separation hyphens are omitted from the description. All authors (if their quantity is from one to three) or the first three authors (if there are more than three authors) followed by “and others” (for Russian-language sources) or “et al” (for English-language sources) are listed before the title of publication. The date of publication, volume and issue of a periodical and electronic pages on which the citation source is announced, should be described in a full format (see examples below).
    • Authors’ surnames should be followed by initials.
    • After initials full stops are used, the surname is separated from initials by a space.
    • Authors should be separated from each other by a full stop and a space.
    • The title of a publication should be separated from the rest part of the reference by a full stop except for references to articles in scientific journals.
    • In references to articles in scientific journals one of signs of punctuation prescribed by ГОСТ Р0.5-2008 should be used — “//” – to separate the title of publication from the subsequent title of edition (signs “–“are omitted from references, no emphasis of anything by putting into italics is required).
    • In the date of publication, place of publication, publisher and of other particulars punctuation should follow examples given below.
  2. Structure of reference (see examples below).
  3. In Bibliography references to sources should be given in the original language of publication (irrespective of the used alphabet).

REFERENCES: SPECIAL RULES FOR WRITING REFERENCES

For correct presentation of information about publications of Russian-speaking authors in the world data bases of abstract and analytical information of scientific research (SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google Scholar etc.), it is required to observe some rules of presentation of lists of literature in Latin script in section “References”.

  1. Particulars as to date and place of publication. Bibliographic descriptions should be implemented in Vancouver format AMA version (Journal of American Medical Association style, http://www.amamanualofstyle.com).The date of publication, volume and issue of a periodical and pages on which a source of reference is given, should be described in a shortened format (see examples below).

All authors (in the quantity from one to three) or the first three authors (if their quantity is more than three) followed by “et al” are listed before the title of publication.

  1. Punctuation.
    • In References punctuation signs “//”, “/”, “–“ prescribed by ГОСТare not used, they should be replaced by commas, semicolons, colons and full stops (see examples below).
    • Authors’ surnames should be followed by initials. Initials should be written together, with no full stops (!) and be separated from the surname by a space.
    • Authors should be separated from each other by commas.
    • The title of a publication should be separated from the rest part of reference by a full stop.
    • In references to articles in scientific journals the title of a journal is emphasized by putting it into italics.
    • In references to other sources the title of book, of collection, newspaper, dissertation, patent are italicized.
    • In indication of the date of publication, place of publication, publisher, other particulars punctuation should follow examples given below.
  2. Structure of reference (see examples of writing references below).
  3. List of sources in References should be given only in the Roman alphabet (with this, it should be a complete analogue to Bibliography, where sources are given in the original language of publication). For references to Russian-language sources (and sources in other languages that do not use the Roman alphabet) the OFFICIAL TRANSLATION or TRANSLITERATION should be used.

REFERENCES: translation and transliteration

References to Russian-language sources (and sources in other languages that do not use the Roman alphabet) should be given either in transliteration (writing of original non-English words in the Roman alphabet), or in English translation, depending on the situation.

  • If the cited article is written in Latin alphabet (that is, in English, German, Spanish, Italian, Finnish, Danish and other languages that use the Roman characters), it should be referred to in the original language of publication.

Example (an article in a Norwegian journal):Ellingsen AE, Wilhelmsen I. Sykdomsangstblant medisinog jusstudenter. Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2002;122(8):785-787. (in Norwegian).

  • If an article is written in OTHER than Latin alphabet – in Cyrillic characters (including Russian), in hieroglyphs, etc., an OFFICIAL TRANSLATION or TRANSLITERATION of reference should be given.

Reference to the source of literature in References may simultaneously include transliterated elements (for example, surname, name, patronymic of authors, journal titles) and translated elements (title of publication).

Transliteration standard. In transliteration the  standard BGN/PCGN United States Board on GeographicNames (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names)/ Permanent Committee on Geographical Names for British Official Use) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_Committee_on_Geographical_Names_for_British_Official_Use) should be used recommended by international publisher Oxford University Press (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_University_Press), as “British Standard”. For transliteration of a text in accordance with BGN standard one may refer to http://ru.translit.ru/?account=bgn.

Surname, name, patronymic of authors, editors. Surnames and initials of all authors should be given in Latin script in the same sequence as in the original publication. If in the original publication (that is, in Bibliography) surname, name and patrionymic of authors were already given in Latin script, in the References this variant should be used (irrespective of transliteration used in the source). If in the official sources (on the journal site, in data bases, including eLibrary) surnames, names and patronymics of authors are not given, one should transliterate them by one self according to BGN/PCGN standard (United States Board on Geographic Names / Permanent Committee on Geographical Names for British Official Use), recommended by international publisher Oxford University Press, as “British Standard”. For transliteration of a text according to BGN standard it is possible to refer to http://ru.translit.ru/?account=bgn.

Title of publication. If the title of a cited work has an official translation into English or an English-language variant (can be found on the journal site, in data bases including eLibrary), just this translation or variant should be given. If in the official sources the title of a publication is not given in Latin script, one should transliterate it by oneself according to the BGN/PCGN standard (http://ru.translit.ru/?account=bgn. One shouldn’t translate the titles of cited publications by oneself since this can be regarded as infringement of author’s right.

Title of publication (journal). Some non-English-language scientific publications (journals), besides the title in the native language, have a “parallel” official title in English (for example, the official English title of “Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Reconstructive Surgery of Childhood”is“Pediatric Traumatology, Orthopaedics and Reconstructive Surgery”).

Thus, to refer to an article from a Russian journal in References either a transliterated, or translated title of the journal should be indicated. A translated title can be taken either from the official site of the journal (or it is possible to obtain the correct spelling of the title of the journal  from the cited article), or from data bases, for example, from title catalogues of data bases MedLine (NLM Catalog), CAS Source Index, WorldCatlibrary or Web of Science (ISI) catalogue. If there is no official English title of the journal, transliteration should be given according to BGN/PCGN system (http://ru.translit.ru/?account=bgn.). For example, the journal “I.P. Pavlov Russian Medical Biological Herald” has no official English title, hence, transliterated title is given «Rossiyskiy mediko-biologicheskiy vestnik imeni akademika I.P. Pavlova»). One shouldn’t translate titles of journals by oneself.

Place of publication. In References place of publication should always be stated in English (not in transliteration) and  in full (with no abbreviations), i.e., Moscow but not «Moskva» and not «M.:», Saint Petersburg, but not «Sankt Peterburg» and not «SPb».

Name of publishing house/publisher. Unlike the place of publication, the name of publisher for citations in References should be given only in transliterated form (except for extremely rare cases of existence of a parallel official English name).

Language identifier. If a publication cited in References is initially written not in English (i.e., you gave transliteration of the title of publication and the title of source in References), the language of the source should be identified at the very end of References in round brackets after the page range. For example, in references to Russian sources the phrase “(in Russ”) should be used.
