Abstract

Valentin A. Neverov, Honored Physician of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, celebrates his 80th birthday. V.A. Neverov is the president of the Russian Association of Traumatologists-Orthopedists of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region, a member of the editorial board of the journals Grekov’s Bulletin of Surgery and Traumatology and Orthopedics of Russia, and a member of the dissertation council on traumatology and orthopedics. His main scientific research focuses on reconstructive and restorative surgery of the musculoskeletal system and hip arthroplasty.

On April 27, 2024, Valentin Aleksandrovich Neverov, an esteemed Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Traumatologist–Orthopedist of Superior Merit of the Department of Hip Pathology at the H.I. Turner National Medical Research Center for Сhildren’s Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, celebrated his 80th birthday.

Valentin Aleksandrovich was born on April 27, 1944 in Uralsk. He received his higher medical education at the Pavlov Leningrad Medical Institute, graduating from the Department of General Medicine in 1968. Immediately after, he entered an internship in general surgery. During his time at the institute, he worked as an ambulance doctor on a resuscitation and surgical team. After completing the internship, he became a graduate student from 1970 to 1974 at the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Studies, where he defended his PhD thesis on “The Influence of Distraction and Compression on the Shape and Morphology of Bone.” After defending his PhD thesis, he continued his work at Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Studies as an assistant and, in 1986, an associate professor in the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics. In 1990, he defended his doctoral dissertation on “Endoprosthetics for Fractures and False Joints of the Femoral Neck in Elderly Patients.” V.A. Neverov was awarded the academic title of Professor and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Surgery and Head of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov of the Russian Ministry of Health, which he headed for 32 years.

His scientific research is primarily focused on reconstructive surgery of the musculoskeletal system and hip replacement. Valentin Aleksandrovich Neverov was the first in the country to perform endoprosthesis replacement of the hip joint in the first hours after a fracture of the femoral neck, and endoprosthesis replacement in patients with aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, with a history of kidney transplantation or receiving hemodialysis. At the H.I. Turner Research Institute for Сhildren’s Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery under the guidance of Professor V.A. Neverov, performing endoprosthetic surgeries for severe destructive changes in joints in children was started.

Valentin Aleksandrovich is the author of more than 450 scientific works and five monographs. The monograph “Revision Endoprosthetics of the Hip Joint” (1997) is the first work on this topic in Russia and has been highly appreciated and recognized by specialists. He has contributed chapters to multi-volume manuals and published 14 guidelines for doctors. Additionally, he received 35 patents for inventions. V.A. Neverov presents scientific reports at international congresses and scientific-practical conferences. The professor has made a significant contribution to the training of orthopedic traumatologists, with approximately 12,000 specialists from all regions of Russia and some other countries trained and retrained at his department. Under his supervision, four doctoral and 13 candidate dissertations were defended. In 1998, Valentin Aleksandrovich was awarded the title of Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation.

V.A. Neverov is the President of the Russian Association of Traumatologists and Orthopedists of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, a member of the editorial board of the journals Grekov’s Bulletin of Surgery and Traumatology and Orthopedics of Russia, a member of the dissertation council on traumatology and orthopedics, and a member of the international organization SICOT.

Valentin Aleksandrovich is a multitalented person. He has been interested in artistic creativity since childhood. His paintings have been repeatedly demonstrated at exhibitions and vernissages at the city and union levels. He passionately loves nature and travel, from which he draws inspiration for his picturesque landscapes.

Valentin Aleksandrovich is descended from a family of doctors. He possesses exceptional intelligence and high professionalism, along with a benevolent and respectful attitude toward colleagues and patients. Numerous students note his friendly and sincere disposition, eagerness to teach, and willingness to pass on his practical experience and scientific knowledge.
