Andrey Ivanovich Krasnov

For almost 50 years, the life of Andrey Ivanovich Krasnov was inextricably linked to the H. Turner National Medical Research Center for Сhildren’s Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery. After graduating in 1972 from the Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute and until 1974, Andrey Ivanovich underwent clinical residency training at the H. Turner Leningrad National Research Institute for Сhildren’s Orthopedics. From 1974 to 1978, he worked as a resident medical specialist in a children’s osteotuberculosis sanatorium in Pushkin, where he received his specialization in surgery for osteoarticular tuberculosis at the Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Education.

From January 1978 to the present, he worked at the H. Turner National Medical Research Center for Сhildren’s Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery, where he rose through the ranks from being an orthopedic surgeon in the Department of Surgery of Large Joints to being the head of the Department of Hip Joint Pathology.

In 1990, he defended his Ph.D. thesis on “Multiplanar deformities of the proximal femur after conservative treatment of congenital hip dislocation in children (pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostics, and treatment).” His thesis paper developed the first system for correcting proximal femur deformities in three-dimensional space, which radically improved long-term results and postponed the development of deforming arthrosis.

From August 1997 to January 31, 2014, Krasnov worked as the head of the Third Department of Hip Joint Pathology.

Having a wide range of modern methods for diagnosing and treating diseases of the musculoskeletal system in children and adolescents, Krasnov actively provided advisory and operational assistance in Russia and neighboring countries.

He brought up more than one generation of trauma tologists and orthopedists. As an associate professor of the Department of Pediatric Traumatology and Orthopedics in the North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov, he shared with students his experience in treating patients with congenital dislocation of the femur, juvenile epiphysiolysis of the femoral head, Perthes disease, etc.

Krasnov authored 180 scientific papers in medical publications, including 3 monographs, 12 textbooks and guidelines, several chapters in 2 national guidelines on traumatology and orthopedics, as well as on pediatrics, and manuals for doctors. He also patented eight methods of surgical treatment of various pathologies of the hip joint and one useful model (instrument) that facilitates surgeries on the joint, which are used in leading Russian clinics.

Under his leadership, one Ph.D. thesis was defended.

The merits of Krasnov and his contribution to the development of Russian science and healthcare are highly appreciated. He received the honorary title of Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, the medal “In Commemoration of the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg,” the medal “For Strengthening the Authority of Russian Science,” and diplomas of the Ministry of Health of Russia, the Committee on Healthcare of St. Petersburg. In 2012, during the 80th founding anniversary of the institute, Andrey Ivanovich Krasnov received the title of Honorary Doctor of the Turner Research Institute for Сhildren’s Orthopedics from the Academic Council, awarding him with a medal of an honorary doctor, a diploma, a gown, and a confederate cap. In 2013, he received a commemorative jubilee gold medal “150 years since the birth of H.I. Turner.”

The production center “ATK Studio” made the documentary film “Support point” about the labor path of Andrey Ivanovich Krasnov.

Andrey Ivanovich was an outstanding personality. He was respected by colleagues and loved by patients for his high professional qualities, kindness, and sensitivity.

Andrey Ivanovich Krasnov will forever stay in our hearts.
