The article is devoted to the discovery, biology, and ecology of unique Diptera insects only 2 mm in size. They were identified as a separate genus Nymphomyia of the family Nymphomyiidae. There are only nine species of this genus in the world fauna, which have survived almost unchanged to the present days from the Cretaceous period of the Tertiary Period, or even from the earlier times.

Wood tin, cryptocrystalline radial fibrous kidney-shaped aggregates of cassiterite, in some tin deposits is the main type of ores. More than that, its high decorative value and positive technological characteristics make it a good source for jewelry. This article considers the main industrial types of tin deposits with wood tin and their mineral composition. Various types of wood tin cutting and examples of jewelry are presented. Gem-quality wood tin can be a by-product of the processing of tin deposits, that requires insignificant consumption of material inputs.

Cyclidans are a group of extinct crustaceans that remain enigmatic due to the rarity of their fossils. They inhabited both the water bodies with different salinity and fresh waters. Cyclidans were among the main components of the reef communities and settled on the practically dead seabed. Neither their ancestors nor the reasons for their extinction are known. The cyclidan morphotype allows us to consider their origin by analogy with the evolution of crabs from lobster-like ancestors and, on this basis, to suggest the appearance of their ancestral form.

Canal and Ships: a Living History of Beloe Lake

At the beginning of the 19th century, the connection of the Kovzha and Vytegra rivers led to the formation of a direct waterway from the Baltic Sea to the Volga, from Saint-Petersburg to Rybinsk. This waterway, known as the Mariinsk Canal System, was an outstanding hydraulic structure for that time. It included rivers, lakes, and a series of canals, dams, and sluices. One of its parts, the Belozersky Bypass Canal, was constructed in 1846 and forever changed the shore environments. The Mariinsk Canal System had existed for more than 150 years, and during all this time wooden cargo ships of various sizes and types (from small boats to heavy barges) have been sailing along it. Nowadays, their skeletons, destroyed by waves and covered with sand, can still be seen on the shores of the Beloe Lake. These unique monuments tell us the history of one of the most important waterways in Russia and enlight the features of wooden shipbuilding and the evolution of lake shores.
