What Is Happening to the Climate and What is It Doing to Us? Echo of One Interview

Kiselev A.

Resumo

On an example of the extreme year of 2020, the average monthly and average seasonal deviations of the surface air temperature from their average values for a twenty-year period have been considered for three cities of the European part of Russia. The simplest methods of mathematical statistics have been used. Some features of the medium-range forecast of the temperature regime are discussed.

High Energy Physics in the Earth's Atmosphere

Chilingarian A.

Resumo

The new methodology of high-energy physics in the atmosphere is characterized by the consistent application of particle physics and nuclear spectroscopy to reveal the details of the operation of electron accelerators that arise directly over our heads in thunderclouds. Together with the lasting minutes fluxes of high-energy electrons and γ-rays from the relativistic runaway electron avalanche (RREA), hour-lasting isotropic fluxes of low-energy γ-rays from 222Rn isotopes were also recorded at the Aragats research station. Each type of cosmic ray brings its own specific evidence of the structure and strength of the atmospheric electric field. The muon deceleration effect observed simultaneously with the largest recorded increase in the flux of electrons and γ-rays on Mount Lomnicki Shtit makes it possible to estimate the maximum value of the atmospheric electric field. By measuring the energy spectra of natural γ-radiation, we have discovered a new effect of the circulation of Radon progeny during thunderstorms. Comparison of the energy spectra of electrons and γ-rays during thunderstorm ground-level exceedances (TGEs) allows to study the emerging electrical structures in the atmosphere, which accelerate the seed electrons of cosmic rays to ≈70 MeV. Simultaneous measuring the fluxes of neutrons and γ-rays with a neutron monitor and a SEVAN hybrid particle detector supports the photonuclear origin of atmospheric neutrons.

Why the Earth Does Not Rotate Evenly and How It Affects the Time Counting

Zotov L., Bizouard C.

Resumo

2020 has been recognized by the scientific climate community as one of the hottest on the planet in recent decades. Also an anomalous acceleration in the rotation of the Earth was observed during this year. The length of the day has reached its minimum. The article discusses the factors influencing the rotation of the Earth, their possible interrelationships and consequences.

Pteranodons from Russia

Averianov A., Arkhangelsky M.

Resumo

The first pterosaur finding in Russia dates back to 1911; it was done in the Upper Cretaceous sediments of Penza Oblast. The discovered cervical vertebra fragment (the holotype of Bogolubovia orientalis) was subsequently referred to the Pteranodontidae and Azhdarchidae. New findings in the Upper Cretaceous of Saratov Oblast demonstrate coexistence of two pterosaurian taxa, azhdarchids and pteranodontids. Volgadraco bogolubovi, the second taxon of Volga pterosaurs, is also attributed to the Pteranodontidae. New findings show that pteranodontids were flourishing and widely distributed group of Late Cretaceous pterosaurs.

Iconic Objects of the Sunduki Mountain Range — Ancient Observatories or a Creation of Natural Wonder?

Nesterenko A.

Resumo

The Sunduki Mountain Range is often referred to the region of the most ancient pyramids and mystical objects of worship, as well as sacred places of Power and, of course, the most ancient observatories like Stonehenge. Petroglyphs marking iconic astronomical objects date back to the Upper Paleolithic period (from 50000 to 10000 years ago). Archaeoastronomy can answer the question whether these objects are a part of the natural mountain range, or of anthropogenic origin and carry astronomical significance and symbolism. Archaeostronomical research of objects involving experts in geodetic surveillance was previously conducted under the guidance of the famous archaeologist V.E.Larichev. On the other hand, such a multifaceted object as Sunduki was lacking attention of geologists for more than 30 years. The geological studies conducted during the 2nd Field Workshop on Archaeoastronomy showed that the alleged archaeoastronomical objects of the Sunduki mountain area and Tarping Mountain are in fact of natural origin, which is associated with the characteristics of the rock formation in these particular locations and the processes of the rock surface destruction due to weathering and erosion.

History of the Microbiological Research of Lake Mogilnoye

Belenkova V., Savvichev A.

Resumo

A unique natural object — the relict Lake Mogilnoye on the Kildin island in the Barents Sea — has been known for a long time. In the scientific and popular literature, there are many publications about the multilayer structure of its water column, as well as about its unusual inhabitants. The article is devoted to the history of microbiological research and to the microbiologists who have been working on Lake Mogilnoye for more than a century, as well as to the amazing microorganisms for which scientists seek to visit the harsh island of Kildin.

The Tradition of Catching and Training of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk in Adjara

Obozova T.

Resumo

Falconry is one of the oldest hunting arts in many countries. In Adjara (Western Georgia), falconry was widespread and in ancient times was of great importance for countrymen; although now it is promoted only by a few enthusiasts. To find the traditional falconers, we went to Adjara, where the world second most important migratory route of birds of prey passes over the Lesser Caucasus Range along the Black Sea. However, this tradition interests us not only from a historical and cultural point of view, but also from a scientific one: we wanted to analyze the bird?human interactions, as only knowledge of the bird’s behavior in nature allowed people to work out the optimal methods of catching and then training of falconry birds.
