This book published on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Ecole des Chartes is a short but informative outline of its history supplemented by data about its present state, its alumni and its ties with affinitive institutions. It is supplied with a bibliography and a name index, contains rich illustrative material and is well written. The book helps to understand the School’s place in the historical science, culture and social life of France. One can regret only its relatively modest size which didn’t permit the authors to treat some aspects of its history more in detail and to highlight the lives and achievements of its most distinguished teachers and alumni.
