The article raises the question of the existence in Rome in the VI century of urban clergy as a community distinct from the papal administration and and to some extent opposed to it. The author argues that the collection of papal biographies known as the “Book of Pontiffs” (Liber Pontificalis) reflects the views and the social ideas inherent in this community. Among them: opposing itself not only to the laity, but also to other religious communities, such as monks, preserving it’s own rights and privileges by creating a system of rituals, observing the hierarchy of clergy and constructing it’s own peculiar picture of ecclesiastical history.
