Abstract

The authors retrospectively analyzed the functional results of 40 sphincter-sparing resections and quality of life indicators during 71 operations for rectal cancer (40 patients underwent intersphincteric resection (ISR) and 31 extralevator abdominoperineal extirpations (EAPE); the distal edge of the tumor from the anal verge was <5 cm). The functional results (the quality of anal continence) met the patients’ expectations in 89.8% of cases; the signs of low anterior resection syndrome were recorded in 94% of the cases. The quality of life indicators did not significantly differ in patients undergoing ISR and EAPE (p=0.046).
