Abstract

The paper considers current neuropsychological ideas about the origin of dreams. It discusses the relationship between dreams and distinct phases of sleeр. The data on the formation of sleeр and dreams at certain stages of ontogenesis are analyzed. There is information on the clinical, psychological, and biological rationales for the importance of dreams, their role in the natural process of mental functioning. The author touches upon the issues of impaired dream formation in the presence of some pathological conditions.
