Diverticular disease of the colon is often asymptomatic, its marked clinical manifestations occur only during the development of complications, such as inflammation, abscess, or perforation. The symptoms of the disease are varied and nonspecific, which requires that more sophisticated diagnostic methods be developed. According to the magnitude of clinical manifestations and the severity of patients’ status, medical or surgical treatment for this disease can be both outpatient and inpatient. The current methods for the diagnosis and treatment of diverticular disease and its complications are reviewed.
