Abstract

The article presents data on pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The main diagnostic criteria, according to the Rome III Consensus and World Gastroenterology Organization are discussed. Clinical variants depending on the prevailing defecation disorders in patients are described. Main pharmacological groups of drugs most commonly used in the treatment of IBS are emphasized.
