Abstract

96 patients were examined to identify a possible association of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and concomitant reflux disease (faringolaringeal reflux disease [FLRD] and gastroesophageal reflux disease), as well as to determine the characteristic changes in the upper respiratory tract in case of their combination. The results showed a high predominant prevalence of FLRD among patients with OSAS (38.5%). Common predisposing factors for obstructive sleep apnea and reflux disease were identified: men with increased body weight and obesity were dominate in both groups. Also, we noted that patients with concomitant reflux experienced significantly more severe complaints of snoring, excessive sleepiness, headache, and fluctuations in blood pressure, according to a questionnaire for OSAS screening and daytime sleepiness scale (p>0.05). Furthermore, manifestations of chronic pharyngitis, II-III degree hypertrophy of the tonsils, and reflux-associated laryngitis were significantly more frequent in these patients.
