URBAN STORIES
LIVE HISTORY OF THE LINEAR CITY
Abstract
The article dwells upon the history of the urban project “Linear City”, which subsequently had a serious impact on the theory of urban planning throughout the world. It also analyzes the reasons for its occurrence and the main ideas that were implemented by its author, Arturo Soria, a Spanish engineer and entrepreneur. A detailed chronology of the project, initial success during its implementation, difficulties are revealed. The article analyzes potential causes that led to a distortion of the project’s basic principles, a complete halt of its development, subsequent degradation and final collapse. Today only a subway station called the Linear City and the main street bearing the name of its author recalls the Linear City of Madrid that was once located there. Most of the research materials are first presented in Russian, and some of the materials are published for the first time in the scientific literature.

URBAN SPACE
HOUSE , CITY, BASILICA: MET AMORPHOSES OF THE INVARIANT CO DE IN THE ST RUCTURE OF THE ARCHITECTURAL PLAN
Abstract
The article analyzes the structure of the architectural plan from the standpoint of the influence of the invariant codes that are simultaneously inherent in such types of objects as a house, a city and a basilica. The invariant code guarantees a kind of topological stability of the structure, regardless of the experiments with the shape of the object. The idea of architectural topology is formed on the basis of analytical diagrams combined with images of plans. The destruction or deviation of the code raises questions about the possibility of effective functioning in all subsystems of the object. On the other hand, it is deliberate experiments with the plan that open the way for us to overcome the normative scenario of archofunction in the interests of spatial adventure and new “architectural stories”.

THE CITY & PEOPLE
SOUTHERN CITY. BEGINNING
Abstract
The article is devoted to a new phenomenon in modern urban construction, a complex residential area located on a vacant plot in close proximity to the largest city. The article is informative and tells how one of these residential areas was designed. It also dwells upon the structure of the residential group, the goals and objectives that were set in the design process. The article reveals the methodology of design work in the mode of the development business project. This information will help to better understand this new urban phenomenon, the value of which is difficult to predict. Will the new residential area, equal in the population of a large city, draw resources from the metropolis or is it the growth of agglomeration associated with the further modernization of Russian society and the growth of its urbanization?

CITY IN MOTION
CITY AND ROAD. THOUGHTS ON KARL MARX AVENUE IN SAMARA
Abstract
The function of the city’s road network as one of the conditions for its formation and existence, as well as the features of its construction in the Soviet Union when moving towards a brighter future, is described. Samara’s Karl Marx Avenue, which has been present in the plans for the city development for more than 90 years, is exemplified. But it has not yet been built, despite the allocation of the land for construction. The consequences of construction in progress for traffic and the urban environment of the surrounding residential areas are discussed. The article also dwells upon its current state and potential consequences of its successful completion in the future. The difference in priorities for road and housing construction in modern Russian cities is described as the reason for the chronic deterioration of the transport situation, as well as the constant failure to fulfill plans for urban road construction.

CITY WITHOUT THE CITY
OBJECTIVE REASONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXTREME HABITATS
Abstract
The evolution of the project culture coincides with the historically determined model of development of a large number of new territories and is a kind of model that illustrates the evolution of species in nature. The desire to develop new territories is a genetically determined necessity. It is natural that men throughout history sought to master the undeveloped and to know the unknown. Nowadays, an extreme environment is the most promising area of architectural science. We can see that the task of studying outer space is complemented by the task of using the studied environment.

WORKSHOP
PHENOMENOLOGICAL MODEL OF THE WORLD IN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
Abstract
Theory and practice of architecture tends to turn to phenomenological concepts. These concepts are viewed as able to restore the meaning of architecture, which has been subject to “repression” due to the humanitarian crisis in its relation to modern design methods. Using M. Heidegger’s ideas as applied to environmental design, the authors offer a concept of the world’s phenomenological model, which describes the relation between reality and an object of design. The authors make a hypothesis that the model can be used as a methodological basis of environmental design in terms of the phenomenological approach. The authors support their ideas by analyzing creative methods of such representatives of phenomenological architecture as S. Holl, P. Zumthor, architectural school MARSH, S. Malakhov and E. Repina’s artistic studio on the basis of the described model. The hypothesis is proved in course projects where the described model is applied.

BRIEFLY
THEORY AND METHOD
Abstract
The article discusses the difference between different approaches to architectural theory: born from individual design practice, from that based on the construction of a fundamentally new picture of design and architectural activity. The differences between end-result-oriented theories and theories that presuppose constant self-restructuring are discussed.
