SAINT LOUIS AND THE REVIVAL OF MODERNISM ARCHITECTURE

Filippov V.D.

Abstract

The author considers the history of design, construction and further development of the modernist residential complex Neighborhood Gardens, built in St. Louis (USA, Missouri) in 1935. The paper provides analysis of the main underlying ideas, the reasons allowing it to be reborn in the XXI century. The author gives an example of the reconstruction of multi-storied housing in France, implemented on the same principles and led to even seemingly similar results. The connection between the architecture of social housing of the New Course in the United States and the architecture of Soviet workers’ settlements, which were designed and built by the USSR People’s Commissariat of Industry and the departments that left it in the second half of the 1930s and the second half of the 1940s, was not clearly identified. The paper draws attention to structure and proportionality of the residential ambiance to a person and the opportunity, given in the American example, reconstruction and revival of such architecture in Russia.

Vologdina N.N., Yarukov V.N.

Abstract

The paper deals with the outstanding architect of the 20th century, pioneering the change of the architectural paradigm and, in fact, promoting the ideas of «freedom» from the cliché of «eternal truths». The Austrian architect Hans Hollein is one of the representatives of the generation of humanistic postmodernism (doctrine, that combines rather contradictory models). The paper draws attention to the contribution of the master to the evolution of the architectural language, particularly the refusal to follow the strict guidelines of the «technological» direction, which considers technology to be the self-sufficient fact. The attention is focused on the projects of «the proponent of freedom», which influenced European urbanism.

ARCHITECTURE AND CONSOLIDATION: MEGALYTICAL MATRIX

Lezhen M.Y.

Abstract

The article presents the hypothesis of the origin of the symbolic spatial form as such: by contradicting the axiom about the housing origin of architecture, it considers the need for social consolidation as an objective source and driving force of architectural shaping. The semantic analysis of the simplest primitive «psychological» stones (megaliths) and the logical method of the «black box» make it possible to reveal a unique mechanism of social cohesion, an effective spiritual matrix that reproduces human unification at the conceptual level, replacing the congenital «social-biological» instinct. The resulting functional model of architectural shaping gives, on the one hand, the tool of the historical analysis of architecture, and on the other hand, methodical and professional applications with respect to actual architectural practice. The logical conclusion of the study is the definition of architecture as a social institution of consolidation and, consequently, of the fundamental national project.

THE EVOLUTION OF A PUBLIC LEVEL ORGANIZATION IN A CITY SAMARA AT THE MARK OF +/- 0.000

Danilova E.V., Valshin R.M., Krestinina I.N.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the historical analysis of Samara’s public spaces at the level of +/- 0.000. Today our city is a collection of fragments from different eras. They differ greatly in the types of planning organization of the public level, the functional saturation and scale of development. From the pedestrian historical compact city, the transition to a modernist type with a micro-district mono-functional building was made. The urban environment has become disparate. In the zero urban level, gaps emerged associated with the lack of of open spaces in pedestrian accessibility and inadequate concentration of public components. Today Samara continues to be built up with neighborhoods with a predominance of residential functions, while not paying attention to the organization of public spaces. The solution to this problem will be an approach based on the creation of a pedestrian city at the level of +/- 0.000, which will be able to form a continuous network of public spaces in the lower level and qualitatively transform urban fabric. The article considers the historical evolution of public spaces in Samara as a necessary precondition for the future of the project.

ARCHOFUNCTION ARISING FROM THE FORMAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE STANDARD SECTION OF THE OBJECT

Malakhov S.A., Boranov S.S.

Abstract

The author considers architectural cuts as a specific type of architectural models existing either as a passive result of a section through the finished form of an object, or as a relatively independent formal experiment that initiates the emergence of a higher «adventure» level of the arkho-function. The authors derive the principles allowing to transform the standard lattices underlying this type of models. The methodological necessity of the formal transformation of the section is justified with the aim of overcoming deadlocks, projecting the section in passive mode to testify the withering of the architectural intrigue.

HELIOLITHOGRAPHIC LABORATORY - TECHNOLOGY OF 3D PRINTING OF STONE OBJECTS ON THE MOON

Rakov A.P.

Abstract

The technology of three-dimensional printing by sunlight on lunar soil will make it possible to manufacture the first stone blocks on the Earth’s satellite. Construction robots will build the first ever-artificial objects on the Moon. The appearance of a base on the Moon will be preceded by an experimental uninhabited artificial stone objects - monuments. Regolith-shrapnel lunar soil for protection of the infrastructure of lunar settlements will be actively used. The first inhabited objects on the Moon will have a massive and strong protection against micrometeorites and radiation, which will be made of local building material. Inhabited shells, ready to accept the first settlers, will be delivered from the ground.

ASPECTS OF A PHENOMENOLOGICAL APPROACH TO ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

Bazina A.N.

Abstract

Nowadays there is a gap between architecture and a human, its spiritual deficiency, dehumanization of urban space and dwelling. UGLY LIVING ENVIRONMENT: FATE OR A VITAL PROJECT GOAL?

Malakhov S.A.

Abstract

A typical picture of «ugly place»: a damaged landscape; typical development from two to seventeen floors; some of the first floors adapted to public functions; conglomeration of cars; external engineering highways; inescapable dirt; lack of a natural range; absence of objects of culture and public spaces; poor quality of services and food; alienation in relation to each other; alcohol shops; excessive distances; undeveloped public transport; lack of identity of place and unique objects; blurring of borders; compositional chaos of development. Then you can pay attention to the dull expression of people: and what, in fact, to expect? The article considers architecture and environmental design as the most rational tools for emerging from oblivion and depression into the world of identity and beauty.
