Abstract

Available data are reviewed on the intranuclear inclusions known as Marinesco bodies in nerve cells. These structures were described for the first time in 1902 in the pigmented areas of human brain (substantia nigra and locus coeruleus), mainly in the melanin-containing neurons. Their sizes correspond roughly to those of nucleoli. One nucleus may contain several Marinesco bodies. Immunohistochemistry showed thate Marinesco bodies comprise ubiquitin and some other proteins of the ubiquitin-proteasome system as well as optineurin and valosin-containing protein, but not proteins associated with the development of certain neurodegenerative diseases, such as в-amyloid, а-synuclein, tau-protein, and the prion protein PrP. A tendency to an increase in the number of Marinesco bodies with increasing age was found, but no correlation with any brain pathology was revealed.
