Abstract
Objective. To study the prevalence of smoking among anesthesiologists-resuscitators and general practitioners in St. Petersburg.
Material and methods. The design of study is a one-time cross-sectional study of a sample of general practitioners (family doctors) and anesthesiologists-resuscitators. The main research method was an anonymous online questionnaire.
Results. The event involved 254 respondents aged 20 to 76 years (mean age 41.7±11.4 years). The proportion of men is 31.5%. 13.8% of respondents smoked tobacco products daily, 7.5% smoked occasionally, and 17.7% quit smoking. The frequency of smoking among men was higher than among women. The most common reason for smoking was smoking of friends (p < 0.05). The second most common reason for encountering smoking was smoking of parents and stress caused by work or study. Among other reasons for men to start smoking, military personnel in the Russian Armed Forces and teenage protest are often cited. According to the study, doctors noted a number of aspects of smoking, but anesthesiologists-resuscitators are 34.2% more likely to express groups of smoking aspects, compared to general practitioners. Even after quitting smoking, anesthesiologists-resuscitators continued to believe that smoking is a good reason to take a break from work, rest or make new acquaintances.
Conclusions. The prevalence of smoking among general practitioners and anesthesiologists-resuscitators was 13.8% and was less than the population in the Russian Federation. No significant differences in the prevalence of smoking between general practitioners and anesthesiologists-resuscitators were found. Taking into account factors that contribute to supervision among doctors, such as stress, the need for a short rest during the working day, dictates the need for organizational measures in medical institutions and departments that will make changes in the personal care of doctors and maintain their health.
