The True Face of A.V.Suvorov

Veselovskaya E.V., Galeev R.M., Kalaschnikova O.V., Kolesova A.S.

Abstract

Everyone knows A.V.Suvorov — the famous commander who never lost a single battle! However, until now there was no exact information about his appearance. A lot of his portraits were made by various artists, but only a few of them were painted during the life of the commander. It is known that Suvorov was very critical of his appearance and refused to pose for artists. An iconographic study of the Generalissimo portraits indicates that the replicated appearance is unlikely to resemble the real one. Many artists used the death mask of Alexander Suvorov during their work on a portrait; however, such images have the post-mortem signs that have not been corrected: a very wide mouth, blurred and drawn nasolabial folds, deeply sunken eyes, etc. Facial morphology specialists of the Laboratory of Anthropological Reconstruction of the Center for Physical Anthropology of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the assistance of the artist carried out painstaking work on the correction the post-mortem changes that were reflected in the mask. This made it possible to reconstruct the real appearance of Suvorov.

Chyornye Zemli of Kalmykia: Is the Desert Returning Back?

Surkova E.N., Kulik A.A., Kuznetsova E.V., Bazykina S.G., Savinetskaya L.E., Tchabovsky A.V.

Abstract

Natural pastures in arid regions are most prone to degradation which often occurs as a result of human activity. For example, overgrazing and a change in land use in the south of Chyornye Zemli in Kalmykia region in the middle of the last century have led to the emergence of the first and the only anthropogenic desert in Europe in the 1980s. However, in the 1990s, vegetation began to recover due to significant economic changes in the USSR and Russia and the reduction of grazing pressure in Kalmykian pastures. By mid–late 2000s, a desert had turned into a secondary anthropogenic tall-grass steppe with the dominance of feather grass and wheatgrass, minor presence of psammophytes, and a small fraction of weed pasture species. Since that time, the pasture communities have changed dramatically once again. Dry years combined with high grazing pressure favored the expansion of non-stabilized sands. Vegetation height and especially cover that were increasing during the steppe formation have decreased sharply. With some delay, the rodent community has reacted to the changes in the plant communities. The process of desertification that began five years ago as a result of pasture degradation gave an advantage to typical representatives of the desert fauna such as the midday gerbil. A rather rapid population growth and recolonization of the previously abandoned territories in the 2021–2022 may be a warning signal of upcoming abrupt transition of the population of the midday gerbil from low- to high-abundance state. If this expectation is true, there is a high probability of reemergence of natural plague foci in Kalmykia.

Cassiterite — Five Thousand Years of History: New Faces

Petrochenkov D.A.

Abstract

Cassiterite has been the main source of tin for five thousand years. However, according to its optical characteristics, hardness, and a variety of colors, it is quite equal to popular jewelry minerals, although remaining little known. The technology of refining and processing of cassiterite, including the production of non-traditional types of cutting, has been developed, which allows it to be widely used in jewelry.

Ferroindialite and Its Unique Symmetry: the Structure of Beryl Group Minerals

Rastsvetaeva R.K.

Abstract

Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis has been used to study a cordierite group mineral found at the Bellerberg deposit (Eifel, Germany). This mineral is distinguished by the increased content of Fe in comparison with Mg in its chemical composition. The hexagonal cell parameters are a = 9.8759(3) Å, b = 9.3102(3) Å, V = 786.40(3) Å3. The crystal structure has been solved in the space group P622 and refined to final R-value of 5.9% for 860 independent reflections with |F| > 3σ(F). The main structural features of the mineral are reflected in its crystal chemical formula (Z = 1): K0.12[Fe2][(Mg0.85Fe0.15]2Al3[Al1.5Si1.5][Si8.4Al3.6]O36, where brackets denote the composition of the octahedral and tetrahedral structural sites. Studied mineral is an iron analogue of indialite with a highly ordered structure, reduced symmetry, and space group P622 that has been for the first time established in natural compounds.

Nature Parks of Volgograd Oblast

Ovcharova A.Y., Kazieva Z.M.

Abstract

Ecotourism is rapidly gaining popularity. There are seven nature parks located on the territory of Volgograd Oblast. They include natural complexes and objects of ecological, cultural, historical, and aesthetic value, and are intended for use for environmental and recreational purposes. The article discusses the tourist potential of natural parks, their transport accessibility, availability of hotels, visitor centers, and quantity and quality of environmental education routes. It is also important to have convenient access to information about parks on the Internet.

“…A sight of unspeakable beauty”. From the diary of Th.Dobrzhansky, 1934

Konashev M.B.

Abstract

The article presents the diary records of Theodosius Grigorovich Dobzhansky, an outstanding Russian-American geneticist, evolutionist, and entomologist. He kept this diary in the summer of 1934, during an expedition to the north-west of North America carried out to study genetic variability of the fruit fly Drosophila pseudoobscura in natural populations and to determine the its distribution range. In these notes, Dobzhansky appears not only as a naturalist and a traveler, but as a person who is truly interested in the lifestyle, customs, and views of the people he met, as well as the cultural, social, and political situation of the places he visited. Thus, these records characterize him himself, both as a scientist and as a person.

A Study on the Limit of Knowledge

Mirlin E.G.
