Quaternary Palaeoentomology: 10 Years in the South of Western Siberia

Gurina A., Dudko R., Zinovyev E., Legalov A.

Resumo

Insects are good indicators of the landscape and climatic conditions of both modern and past eras due to their high abundance and species diversity, as well as their sensitivity to environmental changes. Quaternary insects are relatively well studied in the northern regions, while in the south part of Western Siberia they have been studied only since 2012. Material from more than two dozen localities of Quaternary insects found in this region provides us opportunity to distinguish several types of entomofauna. The “otiorhynchus” fauna which inhabited tundra-steppes in the southern part of the West Siberian Plain during the maximum of the last glaciation is especially conspicuous. The unique combination of species testifies to the extreme contrast of microclimatic conditions of the Late Pleistocene, even in comparison with modern analogues from extracontinental regions. The warming of the Holocene resulted in a decrease in continentality and a distinct change in the species composition of insects. Holocene entomocomplexes are very close to modern ones, with the exception of species associated with human economic activity.

The Current Hydrochemical State of the Rivers of the Lena River Basin

Dzhamalov R., Vlasov K., Safronova T., Oboturov A.

Resumo

The article presents an analysis of the spatial and temporal variability of the content of the most informative hydrochemical components in the Lena River basin for two periods (2010–2014 and 2015–2019) in accordance with the existing most stringent standards for fishery waters. Maps of the average long-term module of the flow of these components are constructed. The influence of climate on the conditions of formation of the surface water regime in the Lena basin is also considered.

Labuntsovites: New Data on Taxonomy and Mineral Species

Rastsvetaeva R.

Resumo

Next year marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of the Soviet mineralogist E.E.Kostyleva-Labuntsova. The mineral kostylevite is named in her honor, and the mineral labuntsovite is named after the both spouses Labuntsov. This article on the labuntsovite crystalchemistry is dedicated to this date. Currently, the labuntsovite group contains 30 mineral species, which are characterized by variations in chemical composition, structural types, symmetry, cationic orderliness, and physical properties.

Genetics of Ocean Fronts

Stupnikova A., Vasilyeva Y., Mosharov S.

Resumo

Current systems in the World Ocean form fronts that divide water masses into frontal zones with different hydrological, physical, and chemical conditions. Water flows carry a variety of zooplankton organisms, creating for them both the necessary conditions for their existence and insurmountable barriers between neighboring water masses. We study zooplankton in the Drake Passage, a region of the Southern Ocean with a complex system of currents. Its waters are populated by eight common species of mesozooplankton. It turned out that seven of them inhabit both sides of the Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ), successfully overcoming the existing fronts. Individuals of these species do not differ significantly either morphologically or genetically on both sides of the front. However one species, Metridia lucens, stands apart from this list, as there are two genetically isolated but morphologically identical groups of this species on different sides of the PFR. Thus, genetic methods provide us opportunity to separate two populations of the one morphologically homogeneous species and to understand the mechanisms of separation of plankton species populations.

Expedition to the Undyulyung: Time to Cut the Stones

Galanin A.

Resumo

It is a continuation of the story about a comprehensive scientific-research Russian-Danish expedition organized in the summer of 2021 to study the chronology of the Quaternary glaciations in Eastern Siberia. The article describes glacial landforms and deposits, loess-ice formations (edoma) with fossil ice veins, kurums, and also tells us about the specifics of the work of the scientific team and the nature of Western Verkhoyansk.

All about Carbonate Rocks (review of the book: G.V.Agafonova. Carbonate rocks: rock-forming components, structures, and classifications)

Komarov V., Samokhvalov S.

Resumo

Новая книга Г.В.
