Abstract

The article is dedicated to the function of the descriptions of war in the Chronicon of Regino of Prüm. Regino notably gives more attention to the war that the Franks and the Bretons waged against the Normans. By comparing the successes of the Bretons and the failures of the Franks, Regino comments on the dangerous disunity in their kingdoms. Moreover, some textual characteristics of the Normans are assigned to the Regino’s contemporary leaders of the Franks, such as Zwentibold and Adalbert Babenberg, thus drawing a parallel between their atrocity and that of the pagan Normans.
