SIGILLOGRAPHY IN THE AGE OF VAIN MARQUISES

Filippov I.S.

Abstract

This article presents Brigitte Miriam Bedos-Rezak, professor of the New-York University and one of the leading contemporary specialists in medieval sigillography of Western Europe to the Russian reader. It also provides a brief introduction to her research. Attention is drawn to the importance of seals as sources for the study of different aspects of medieval society and culture, as well as to the enormous contribution of the 17th century historiography to the formation of historical science, including sigillography and other auxiliary historical disciplines.

METHODS OF COGNITION: FROM A SEAL TO SIGILLOGRAPHY

Bedos-Rezak B., Mikhalchuk A.A., Filippov I.S.

Abstract

The article focuses on the emergence of scientific interest, among the antiquarians and historians of the 17th century, for medieval seals as a historical source. The author shows that during this period seals which previously attracted attention mainly of genealogists and specialists in heraldry gradually became a self-sufficient object of research, at least in England, Flanders and Italy. In France interest for medieval seals became apparent somewhat later and was connected with the publication of Jean Mabillon’s treatise De Re Diplomatica in 1681. Its main aim was defining the authenticity of historical documents. The French historian proposed to solve this problem by making use of different data including those contained in seals. This very new approach to the study of seals implied subduing sigillography to the needs of diplomatics and putting the cultural and symbolic aspects of medieval seals into the shade. The author thinks that despite the significance of Mabillon’s work for the development of historical research and the importance which he assigned to the study of seals, his method did not become the basis for the diversified and holistic study of seals as historical sources. Its roots should be searched for rather in the 17th century research in England, Flanders and Italy.

ANTI-CRISIS VACCINE: WHY MEDIEVALISTS TRANSLATE AND PUBLISH THEIR SOURCES (NOTES ON THE MARGINS OF THE READERS’ CONFERENCE OF THE REVUE «MIDDLE AGES»)

Sidorov A.I.

Abstract

The paper analyzes the problem of changing the status of translation of medieval sources and the attitude to translation activities in Russian medieval studies over the last two hundred years. Throughout the XIX and most of the XX century, Russian historians, with rare exceptions, did not consider the preparation of a commented translation and its subsequent publication as an independent and self-valuable type of scientific activity, giving this area to philologists and linguists. The situation changed dramatically at the turn of the XX and XXI centuries, which, obviously, should be associated with a sharp transformation of historical science itself. In the context of the destruction of scientific methodologies, the increasing fragmentation of historical knowledge and the rapid devaluation of research developments, translation work has objectively turned out to be the most comfortable form of academic activity for historians. On the other hand, it is precisely such a scientific product that is in full demand among the mass audience today.

«MURDER, PILLAGE AND ARSON»: THE FUNCTION OF DESCRIPTIONS OF WAR IN THE TEXT OF THE CHRONICON OF REGINO OF PRÜM

Sofronov O.V.

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the function of the descriptions of war in the Chronicon of Regino of Prüm. Regino notably gives more attention to the war that the Franks and the Bretons waged against the Normans. By comparing the successes of the Bretons and the failures of the Franks, Regino comments on the dangerous disunity in their kingdoms. Moreover, some textual characteristics of the Normans are assigned to the Regino’s contemporary leaders of the Franks, such as Zwentibold and Adalbert Babenberg, thus drawing a parallel between their atrocity and that of the pagan Normans.

INTERPRETATION OF THE AMAZON MYTH IN CHRISTINE’S DE PIZAN THE BOOK OF THE CITY OF LADIES (1405)

Bychkov P.S.

Abstract

The chapters dedicated to Amazonian queens and warriors in Christine’s de Pizan The Book of the City of Ladies (1405) are one of the most original and remarkable fragments of the whole book. In the XIV–XV centuries these figures appeared in prose and poetry, as well as in the visual art. Christine de Pizan constructs the new image of the Amazons, reevaluating the medieval tradition of their interpretation and adding a new meaning to their story. Basing her story on Petrarch and Boccaccio works, she uses ancient motifs and famous female heroines in order to oppose them to the misogynistic view of Christine’s contemporaries on female nature. This new interpretation of Amazons will find reflection in French culture of XV–XVI centuries due to the biography of Joan of Arc and will root the image of Amazon queens in art and literature of the following centuries.

PROCEDURAL DEVELOPMENT IN MANORIAL COURTS OF MEDIEVAL ENGLAND

Vinokurova M.V.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to reveal the specificity of English medieval manorial courts’ – functioning in the 13th–14th centuries. It is an attempt to show in what way they correlated with the courts of the Common Law of England and what were their legal borrowings from the Common Law system. To reveal the procedural growth in the process of establishment of the main legal manorial institutions (the Jury, presentments on the basis of inquisition, documentary proof of the judgment) is also one of the basic tasks of the article. In what way did medieval English manor make the transition from ordeals, compurgation and “peasant halimots” to a more civilized procedure (adversarial courts) partly based on the Common Law legal principles? It is also worth bearing in mind that procedural growth in the manorial courts was closely connected with everyday life of medieval English peasantry, including influence of immemorial customs on its development. Fundamental meaning of manorial customs (and their links with everyday life) gives an opportunity to stress the formation and development of customary law, which may be regarded as an important regulator between manorial powers and English peasantry, maintaining traditional social, economic, rental, behavioral etc. rules in medieval English manor in order to keep «peaceful life» within the estate as well as to promote to growth of the lord’s incomes and to definite security of the peasants’ rights (especially in the sphere of valid yearly rents). All these important aspects of manorial life were vital for specific development of English medieval and Early Modern peasantry in historical perspective.

HEXAMILION AND THE PROBLEM OF PROTECTING THE PELOPONNESE FROM THE TURKS IN THE BYZANTINE POLITICS OF THE LATE 14th – FIRST HALF OF THE 15th CENTURIES

Ryazanov P.A.

Abstract

From the end of the 14th century the Peloponnese was under threat of Turkish conquest. The government of Byzantine Morea was the first to meet the need to revive Hexamilion, a late antique defensive wall against barbarians which was built across the Isthmus of Corinth. Since that time, Byzantine diplomacy started to include the issue of restoring the Isthmian fortifications on the agenda. Limited resources of the Morean despotat at first did not allow this plan to be realized on alone, so Theodore I Palaeologus was forced to seek an alliance with the Venetian Republic and the Hospitallers. Only after large-scale restoration work, carried out first by Manuel II Palaeologus, and then by his son Constantine XI, the Hexamilion wall acquired a serious military-defensive potential. Study of the Isthmian protection problem in the Byzantine policy of the late 14th – first half of the 15th centuries is the purpose of this research.

«THIS TRADE IS VERY CONVENIENT AND BRINGS GREAT PROFIT TO YOUR SUBJECTS AND PACIFICATION TO YOUR KINGDOM»: RUSSIAN-FRENCH COMMERCE IN NARVA IN THE CONDITIONS OF THE BALTIC WARS OF THE 1560S

Ryabov S.M.

Abstract

The article examines the organization and the state of Russian-French trade in Narva in the 60s of the 16th century, in the context of the struggle of North-Eastern European states for hegemony in the Baltic region. Based on analysis of correspondence, mainly of the French Ambassador to Denmark Charles de Danzay with the Kings of France, the author concludes that the Russian state and the French kingdom are mutually interested in building and strengthening bilateral commerce. It proves that in the mid 1560s French trade routes to Narva in Russia intensified despite resistance from the Polish and Swedish kings, but that commerce declined after the Swedish navy was liberated from military action following the Seven Years’ War of 1563–1570 and the blockade on Narva was subsequently reinforced. It is therefore concluded that it was in the political international scenario of the 1960s that the French were forced to find an alternative route for commercial communication with the Russian state via the Baltic.

THE CLERIC AND THE BORDER AUTHORITY: THOMAS MAGNUS ON THE ANGLO-SCOTTISH BORDER

Beltser A.A.

Abstract

The participation of representatives of the clergy in government in the Middle Ages and early modern times has long attracted the attention of scholars. However, it is mainly representatives of the episcopate and their participation in central government, court politics and diplomatic missions that have come under the spotlight. The career of Thomas Magnus, a clergyman who never held the bishopric but played a key role in the administration of the Scottish border counties for several decades, provides a better picture of both royal policy in the Anglo-Scottish borderlands and the use of clerics in the royal service under the early Tudors.

«MY LORD IS MY HOPE»: STROKES TO THE PORTRAIT OF A DUCHESS

Prokopiev A.Y., Savelev G.A.

Abstract

The article deals with the records in the copy of the Bible kept in the collection of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which allow highlighting the personality and circumstances of the life of Elizabeth Magdalena (1580–1649), Duchess of Courland and Semigallia. Autographs of princely persons, marginalia and handwritten invectives reflect aspects of the dynastic solidarity of the princely houses of the Empire and the Baltic states, the spiritual world of the representatives of the princely elite and key episodes from the political history of the Duchy of Courland at the beginning of the 17th century. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between Elisabeth Magdalena and Duke Wilhelm, whose reign was associated with one of the most dramatic episodes in the life of Courland: the murder of the Nolde brothers in 1615.

Tulenev V.M.

Abstract

The review introduces the second volume of the “Anthology of Pedagogical Heritage”, which is dedicated to pedagogy and the school of the Middle Ages. FROM DEMONIZATION TO VENERATION: JOAN OF ARC IN ENGLAND IN THE 15th–19th CENTURIES (ORGELFINGER G. JOAN OF ARC IN THE ENGLISH IMAGINATION, 1429–1829. University Park: the Pennsylvania State University Press, 2019. 230 p.)

Togoeva O.I.

Abstract

The article undertakes a detailed analysis of the first monographic study devoted to the problem of describing the history of Joan of Arc in the English sources of the 15th–19th centuries. The book of Gail Orgelfinger, to a certain extent, filled a crucial gap in the études johanniques that existed for several centuries. It analyzed texts of various genres: official correspondence, chronicles, historical writings, fiction and poetry. On this material, the author tries to demonstrate how the attitude towards Joan of Arc of her yesterday’s enemies has changed, what epithets they awarded her, what figures of silence and fiction they used describing the events of the Hundred Years’ War, how they argued their position. Despite the significant shortcomings noted in the review, the appearance of this monograph can be welcomed: it will serve as a basis (both in source studies and in historiographical terms) for subsequent studies of the proposed issues.
