WHERE DID THE ROMANS DISAPPEAR AFTER 476?

Filippov I.

Аннотация

The aim of this article is to find out why does contemporary research largely ignores the fate of the Romans after they lost a state of their own but continued to exist as a particular society and bearers of a particular language and culture. From this point of view the author studies the situation in the eight most important national schools of historiography: German, French, Italian, Spanish, British, American, Austrian schools and the Russian school; the latter receives special attention. With respect to each of these schools, the author investigates the scientific traditions which made this historiographic situation possible as well as the influences coming from social life. In conclusion, he proposes several ways of approaching the issue of the Roman society after 476, with regard to the state of the surviving sources and to the realities of the early medieval Europe.

NOT ONLY A «COEXISTENCE», BUT ALSO AN «INTERPENETRATION»: EVGENY A. KOSMINSKY’ MEMORIES OF THE SCIENTIFIC TRIPS TO ENGLAND IN 1952 AND 1956

Zemlyakov M., Selivanova O.

Аннотация

This article continues the previous publication of V.M. Lavrovsky’ memories based on his impressions of a scientific trip to Great Britain in the mid-1920s. In the second part documents in which E.A. Kosminsky wrote about two scientific trips to the United Kingdom in 1952 and 1956 are presented to readers. In the preface the authors pay their attention to the difference between the scientific trips of 1925–1926 and the 1950s (particularly combination of scholarly studies with administrative duties, significant resonance of these trips in the English press). Each of the published documents is provided with a detailed commentary, which indicates the date and circumstances of its appearance, as well as corrections and explanations made by E.A. Kosminsky in printed texts.

THE «NEWNESS» MOTIF IN DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ACTS OF REPRESENTATION OF POWER BY LIUTPRAND OF CREMONA

Anufrieva A.

Аннотация

Liutprand of Cremona is one of the brightest historiographers of the Ottonian age, whose worldview was significantly different from the views of other authors of the same circle, due to a different background and an unique experience, gained in his youth. An important direction of research of his worldview is the analysis of conceptual apparatus. In particular, the concepts, associated with «newness» in the context of public representation of power, acquired an unusual meaning for him. The rulers from the Ottonian dynasty in the middle of the 10th century established themselves on the throne quite recently, and thus the accentuation of the «newness» motif could seem an inappropriate hint of the precariousness of their position. However, despite this, Liutprand wrote about «newness» with positive connotations, opposing it to «decrepitude» as a testimony of the spiritual decline of political opponents. At the same time, the historiographer thought it possible to combine «newness» with ancient symbolic tradition when it was necessary for the glorification of Otto I himself.

Fedosov D.

Аннотация

John Barbour (ca. 1320–1395) has been justly acknowledged as the founder of literature in Scots. The Bruce, his monumental achievement, is at once a metrical romance, a biography of Robert I, King of Scots, and a historical chronicle which became the national epic of Scotland. TRANSFER OF PEASANT PROPERTY IN MANORIAL COURTS OF MEDIEVAL ENGLAND

Vinokurova M.

Аннотация

The paper offers a number of problems connected with special forms of peasant property’s transfers in everyday life of medieval English manor. Research is made mainly on the basis of manorial court rolls (in particular, of XIII–XIV centuries). As far as English medieval peasantry (villeins and copyholders) had no legal rights to probate, they had to use special forms of «property succession». Thus, they had to transfer their land in the manorial courts (that is to surrender it «into lord’s hands» either to be admitted again or to pass the land to children or other persons after the term of holding’s expiration). Conditions of land transfer were written in indenture and were followed by fealty to the lord and by paying the entrance fine. Transfer of peasant property in the manorial courts took place not only in case of peasant holding term’s expiration or tenant’s death, but also in order to register dower of widows, to register cases of urgent necessity (deadly disease, debt obligations, starvation etc.) or mark the status of land’ changing. Sometimes there also occurred land transfers for reasons of mercy, but the most unique were so called deathbed transfers (out-of-court surrenders), just a little studied by historians. Deathbed surrenders took place at the housing of the peasant, who was deadly ill and wasn’t able personally to walk to manorial court. Thus he had orally to express his will in the presence of witnesses and representatives of manorial administration, who later made notes at the court. This form of manorial transfer, rather unique, needs further thorough research on the basis of special documents.

COMMON GUILD FUNDS IN THE 15TH–18TH CENTURIES’ REIMS

Kirillova E.

Аннотация

The paper examines the traditions of collecting, storing, accounting and spending the common funds of the Reims guilds in the Middle Ages and the Modern Period. With these funds, corporations paid royal taxes, paid for the work of their officials, church services, legal costs, and ran current affairs. The author examined in detail the sources of income: both regular and one-time payments, including entrance fees of masters, journeymen and apprentices, deductions from fines and confiscations, and others. The author presents the main items of expense, the rules about the regular financial reports to the representatives of corporations and to the city authorities, the practices aimed at preventing losses and waste of common funds.
