Abstract

The recent study gives evidence that estrogens and estrogen receptors play an important role in colorectal cancerogenesis. The nuclear estrogen receptor ERß is predominantly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, including colonic epithelium. It plays an important role in the proliferation and differentiation of normal colonic mucosa. Expression of ERß is selectively lost in human malignant colon tissue, leading to disruption of differentiation, reduction of apoptosis, malignant transformation of the colonic mucosa, poor prognosis of disease.
