Abstract

Background. Organic mental disorders represent one of the most significant medical and social issues in psychiatry. Studying the characteristics of patients suffering from organic mental disorders can help identify risk factors and contribute to the development of effective preventive strategies.

Aim. To investigate the characteristics of hospitalized patients of working age with organic mental disorders for the purpose of creating a personalized database as an information foundation to enhance the effectiveness of providing psychiatric preventive and therapeutic-rehabilitation care.

Material and research methods. A continuous analysis of psychiatric hospitalization cases from 2000-2019 was conducted for working-age patients (men aged 18-59 and women aged 18-54) with organic mental disorders in the Republic of Tatarstan. Descriptive statistical methods (calculation of intensive and extensive indicators), analysis of time series, and Student's t-test were applied in the analysis.

Results. The total number of hospitalizations amounted to 31,625, with fluctuations ranging from 1,101 to 2,194 per year. The average indicator was 1,151.25 hospitalizations per year. A pronounced prevalence of male patients was observed among hospitalized individuals. The age structure of all hospitalized patients was dominated by those aged 40-49, followed by the 50-59 age group. The most common diagnoses were from ICD-10 sections F06 (53.8%) and F07 (45.4%). The most frequent causes of hospitalization were personality disorders related to mixed diseases (F07.08). Diagnoses within the F06 block were more common among women (59.9±0.49 for women and 51±0.34 for men per 100 hospitalized, respectively), while those within the F07 block were more common among men (48.2±0.34 per 100 men and 39.6±0.45 per 100 women) (p<0.001).

Conclusion. The study results will facilitate the creation of a personalized database for working-age individuals with organic mental disorders, contributing to the improvement of treatment and rehabilitation assistance quality and a significant increase in the effectiveness of preventive measures for this patient category.
