Abstract

Post-stroke depression (PD) is a common complication after stroke that increases mortality and reduces the effectiveness of stroke treatment. In this regard, it is important to clarify risk factors for PD. Subjects were 80 patients in the residual period of a stroke with 14 of them being diagnosed PD. To determine the relationship between single factors we used analysis of contingency tables with Fisher's exact method. Three major features of PD were found. First, manifestation of PD correlated with neuroticism. Second, PD was formed in extroverts with neuroticism; therefore, people with choleric temperament being impaired. Third, PD was diagnosed in choleric subjects when the localization of stroke being in the dominant hemisphere. Thus, integrated assessment of constitutional-personal traits of patients, localization of brain damage and profile of motor asymmetry can predict the development of PD.
